Drifting & Dreaming
Level of difficulty: Intermediate/Professional
Drifting & Dreaming is intentionally direct in its compositional approach. Beginning with a relaxed and pianistic, Satie-esque opening, the piece develops by way of increasingly chromatic harmony, and faster rhythmic motifs. Tension is built with the use of occasional changes in time signature, from 3/4 to 2/4 (and later 12/16), and of further chromaticism and dissonance (partly through use of the whole-tone scale). The piece then starts to wind down using similar melodic material as at the outset, but with different, shifting harmonic colours. The change of metre from 3/4 to 4/4 releases tension, and the initial slow harmonic movement of this passage lends the music a dream-like quality as the piece draws to a close.
Note that some whole tone sections have been enharmonically spelled to aid reading.

Plaything
Level of difficulty: Intermediate/Professional
The primary compositional focus in this childlike rhythmic piece is the intervallic fourth which is utilised throughout. Using a walking bass line as a reference point, various relatively complicated and heavily accented rhythms are played by the upper three voices, interrupted with a playful quality with homophonic rising or falling consecutive chord passages in all four parts. This particular idea (essentially the nuclei of the piece) stemmed from improvising at the piano. Deliberately reflecting a child's natural changing absorption in different things, there are a number of contrasting sudden changes within the piece, both in terms of skittish key shifts as well as the use of much slower paced, but nevertheless slightly mischievous sections.

Purest Green
Level of difficulty: Intermediate/Professional
Purest Green took its name not from the pleasant surroundings of Greenwich Park, close to where the composer was studying at the time, but from a line in the BBC TV sitcom Blackadder II. The composition is unsurprisingly therefore a humorous, playful one, reflecting both the title and (allegedly) an element of the composer's personality. Composed intuitively within a jazz genre, this light-hearted piece often uses a traditional walking bass pattern in the baritone, which gives a familiar reference point to build material over. Jazz harmony is employed throughout, as are occasional key shifts, which are typical within the genre.
